// NAME
scenario_name = A Bloody Day at Verrières Ridge

// DESCRIPTION
scenario_descr = The plan had been to capture Caen on D-Day or shortly thereafter. Instead, only on 19 July after six weeks of fighting culminating in Operations Charnwood and Atlantic, was the city finally secured. About 8 kilometers (5.0 mi) south of Caen, Verrières Ridge blocks a further Allied advance to Falaise. The ultimate goal of Operation Atlantic had been to take this ridge. Although initially successful, strong counter-attacks by the 1st SS Panzer Corps, under Oberst-Gruppenführer Sepp Dietrich, caused the offensive to stall.||Now, in Operation Spring, the attack is to continue. Led by the youthful Lieutenant General Guy Simonds, the 2nd Canadian Corps, including the Calgary Highlanders and the Black Watch, will attempt to take May-sur-Orne, Verrières, and objectives south of the ridge, thus making a bulge in German lines and increasing the chance of a breakout from Normandy.||On a strategic level, it is said that the attack will hold the German panzer forces in the British sector so that the U.S. can break out from the Normandy beachhead in Operation Cobra. On a tactical level, this is not the message passed down by the HQ of the 2nd Canadian Corps. They say it is an attack to drive the Germans from the high ground.||Easier said than done. The Germans are expecting further attacks on Verrières Ridge and consequently have reinforced Verrières Ridge in the days preceding the attack. By the end of 24 July, 480 tanks, 500 field guns, and four more infantry battalions have been moved into the sector.

// BRIEFINGS
briefing_2_0 = For all that Operation Atlantic accomplished, it did not go far enough. Indeed, some of its accomplishments have been rolled back by strong German counterattacks.
briefing_2_1 = The enemy still holds, or has retaken, Basse, Etavaux, and Le Cours d'Orne. Yet, HQ believes their forces here are of nominal strength only and therefore do not pose a threat to our flank. In this new offensive, Operation Spring, the impetus will definitely be forward. Forward, I say!
briefing_2_2 = The 2nd Canadian Corps will take May-sur-Orne and Verrières Ridge. Then we will proceed south to Fontenay-le-Marmion and Rocquancourt. This may break the German lines, routing them altogether, but if not, it will keep up the pressure on them so that they dare not divert any forces to oppose the Americans. If we don't smash Fritz, they surely will with a flank attack from the west.
briefing_2_3 = Incidentally, General Simonds has let it be known that he does not want to answer to General Montgomery should his beloved Royal Tank Regiment suffer undue losses. Know this: Montgomery frequently wears the regiment's beret in the field! Yes, it's a delicate situation. The RTR must see some action in order to avoid embarrassment and they will probably be needed in any case. Handle them with care.

// TRIGGER TEXTS
event_trigger_7_37_title = RTR Destroyed!
event_trigger_7_37_text = Oh no, no, no. No! It cannot be true. The Royal Tank Regiment is out of action with heavy losses? How did this happen? Who is going to tell Monty?
event_trigger_9_35_title = Panzer Kaput!
event_trigger_9_35_text = An enemy panzer unit has been decimated. Each tank destroyed is one less between us and Berlin.

// OUTCOME EVENTS
outcome_2_0_title = Major Defeat
outcome_2_0_text = Stopped again! Apparently we don't have the firepower to punch through the defenses at Verrières Ridge. It would help if the Yanks would get off their arses and hit these blokes from the west!

outcome_2_3_title = Minor Victory
outcome_2_3_text = While we couldn't achieve everything that we wanted to, the main thing is we are over the Verrières Ridge and beyond. It would seem an Allied breakout from Normandy is now in the works.
outcome_2_4_title = Major Victory
outcome_2_4_text = The ridge at Verrières is ours, as are May-sur-Orne and objectives south of the ridge. Enemy panzer units have been decimated at little cost to our own armour. An all-around victory to be sure!
